Why the extra lessons?
Since my niece’s promotion to Standard One last September, I have observed, on many occasions, serious errors in almost all subject areas in her books. This is of great concern to me because my niece and other children are being subjected to erroneous information on a daily basis.
Furthermore, the teacher started giving lessons to these same children after school, three days a week until 5 pm for which I might add they must pay. Can you imagine that seven-to-eight year olds who only recently left the Infant Department are being forced to stay after school for lessons? This is so because the teacher is telling the silly parents that their child needs it. To make matters worse, when term test was done, topics not covered in the class appeared on the test papers. Is it because these topics were taught in lessons and my niece is just missing out?
Why are parents being hoodwinked into believing that some teachers can only cover the syllabus if they give extra lessons? What does extra lessons really mean at this age? Are lessons not supposed to be a review of work already done during regular class hours? Isn’t it really for weak students? Come on educators! Say something! My brother and his daughters need answers now!
