Father saves baby...

A Morvant father yesterday managed to save his four-month-old son before he was shot dead. In another incident, a BoBo Shanti follower was killed by gunmen. About 8 pm on Thursday, 29-year-old, Nigel McCree was with his son Mhelki at his Chaconia Avenue home when he was confronted by two gunmen. He rushed young Mhelki inside the house but was shot dead by the gunmen. An eyewitness told Newsday, at the Forensic Science Centre, that McCree’s quick action saved the baby’s life.

He was employed by the Morvant County Council, and also did part-time jobs as a house painter. McCree’s girlfriend, Terry Ann Joseph, said that she could not understand why anyone would want to take his life.

In the second incident, 29-year-old Martin DeGannes, otherwise known as “BoBo” of Regent Street, in Belle Eau Road, was killed at Browne Lane, by a lone gunman at 9.30 pm.

Alicia David, DeGannes’ girlfriend, said that he had left the house to speak with a friend about an upcoming christening.

“Right after BoBo left the house my uncle called, and said he saw him being chased by a gunman,” David said.

David stated that she called DeGannes’ cell phone and no one answered. “I then heard shots fired and when I went outside I saw his body in the bush at Browne Lane.”

DeGannes was employed as a construction worker and also did extra work cleaning yards around the community. The body was viewed by the district medical officer and ordered removed to the Forensic Science Centre. Three suspects were held by investigators within half-an-hour in the Belle Eau Road area, and taken to the Port-of-Spain CID for questioning. The murders are being investigated by the Homicide Bureau of Investigations.

DeGannes is the third murder victim within the past week in the Belle Eau Road community. Lester DuPont, a 65-year-old security guard was shot dead at his Belle Eau Road home on Monday and on Tuesday afternoon, 20-year-old Bevon Roberts was executed by a gunman. Jason Ballantyne, 24, was shot by a gunman while he was liming at Holly Betudeau Road, in La Horquetta, on Thursday night. Ballantyne is warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) where he is listed in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

According to reports, at about 7.30 pm, Ballantyne was shot by two men who approached him. He was shot in the right arm and right leg.

The murder rate is at 181 for the year.
