“The carcass of a pregnant agouti was hidden in the back of the van in a pair of rubber boots,” he said, “along with other hunting equipment like headlights, hammocks, rope and a cutlass.”

He said the men, aged 27 and 33, were charged with hunting in the closed season and for being in possession of a second schedule animal — an agouti.

A second schedule animal under the Wildlife Act is an animal that can be legally hunted in the open or hunting season from October to February but not after February because the hunting season is closed.

The source said the same team of officers stopped a group of men in the Navet Dam area on State lands recently.

“They seized their slingshots and warned them not to carry any slingshots on State lands because, according to the Wildlife Act, a slingshot is referred to as a gun, therefore making it a device capable of being used for hunting.”

Charges were laid by game wardens Ramlogan and Leith.
