NP operations back to normal

In a statement yesterday, NP said a small amount of LPG was emitted from a line at the plant’s storage facility at about 7.30 am on Wednesday. The company said four workers who were in the area at the time received minor injuries for which they were immediately treated and employees were evacuated while safety officers investigated the cause and determined solutions to the problem.

As a result, NP said employees’ vehicles and fuel trucks were parked outside the compound until safety officers deemed it safe for them to re-enter. NP said the incident caused a temporary shutdown of operations and resulted in a delay to its service station network. However, the company said the situation has since been rectified and assured the public that “we are working to return our delivery service to a state of normalcy, to ensure minimal inconvenience to all our customers.”

When Newsday visited NP’s Sea Lots compound yesterday it was business as usual with fuel trucks and other vehicles entering and leaving the compound at regular intervals. Further checks revealed that there was no work stoppage on any part of the plant at any time yesterday.

Attempts to contact NP officials about the status of the affected workers or measures to prevent a repeat of Wednesday’s incident were unsuccessful. OWTU officials said they had no information about Wednesday’s incident including the identities of the affected workers. Asked if they knew whether operations at Sea Lots had returned to normal, the officials said they were uncertain and only NP could answer that question.
