PowerGen celebrates World Environment Day

This year’s event saw twenty-three primary schools from Port-of-Spain and environs participating in a spelling-bee competition. The schools were given 150 environmental words to prepare. “Green cities a plan for the planet,” was the theme of this year’s World Environment Day. Judges for this year’s competition were Heidi Sandy and Lindy-Ann Peters of the Russell Latapy Secondary School and Jemma Jordon of Morvant/Laventille Secondary School was the chief judge. It was indeed a difficult task for the judges as they eliminated participants during ten rounds of competition.

In the end however, the results were:

• First place, Akina Isaac of Melville Memorial Girls

• Second place Simone Creed of Mucurapo Girls RC

• Third place Christina Charles of St Theresa Girls RC

The feature speaker was PowerGen’s own Anthony Roberts, O&M Engineer — Environment. Roberts’ presentation was well received by both students and teachers alike.

This year’s prizes included multi-media computers, a chrome tenor pan, and Yamaha keyboards. Individual and group prizes were also offered to students placing first to third with tokens being given to all participants. The students were also entertained by the group Surge. PowerGen’s contribution to the celebration of World Environment Day is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to operating in an environmentally responsible manner.
