Teenage beauty queen Subrina, taking responsibility

Apart from this, the young woman has proven that she is a true leader — taking control of her life and excelling at everything she does. She is the holder of nine ‘O’ Levels subjects and is presently a form six student pursuing modern studies. Subrina stands tall and is well respected as a class prefect and junior treasurer for the student prefect body.

Both her parents Vishnu and Mona Bissessarsingh are proud of the way she has been able to achieve her goals. They have been instrumental in supporting Subrina in everything she does in life.

When she is not studying, she loves listening to music and dancing. When the opportunity arises she loves being on stage — modelling and acting. She also list cooking as one of her hobbies.

“I have a strong thirst for knowledge since knowledge brings wisdom and this can make a difference in society. I believe that nothing in this world is impossible with self confidence, commitment, hard work, and perseverance. With faith in God, I can achieve the most challenging goal despite the obstacles I may encounter,” she said like a true winner. One of her future ambitions includes becoming a chartered accountant to work for the United Nations and judging by the way she is going, she will reach this goal. At a recent debate for the Couva Youth Group Subrina submitted a paper on ‘Women Issues’. She wrote: ‘‘Women have been facing and continue to face gender issues throughout the years. The problem of inequality faced by women has been addressed by the great Mahatma Gandhi he said, ‘Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacities. She has the right to participate in the minutest details in the activities of man, and she has an equal right of freedom and liberty with him.’

“Even programmes organised by the United Nations have helped women to recognise their rights. Today, most women have proven themselves to be independent individuals. No longer are they following the traditional habit of being dominated by men. Most women in this modern-day society have proven themselves to be competent in the field of politics, sports and education.” She continued to say, “Recently, the first woman prime minister, Portia Simpson Miller was appointed in Jamaica. In Trinidad we have our very own Kamla Persad Bissessar who plays a major role in the Opposition Party and is involved in various social groups. In sports, we have our successful National Netballer Jean Pierre.”

she also mentioned the talented chutney, blind singer, Asha Kamachee. She noted that the lack of sight did not keep Asha back from being one of the top recording artiste in the country. “Its easy when you set about life wanting to gain instead of lose. With the right attitude you will realise there is only one way to go in life and that is up.”
