This course is designed for non-native speakers of English and will assist participants to sharpen their listening and conversation skills.
By the end of this course, students will be able to initiate conversation on various topics, to communicate with native speakers in the appropriate register and to make brief oral presentations. Students will also be able to write longer personal letters and simple business letters and to summarise short selections of text. A communicative, practical approach will be used. Students will be placed in a level appropriate to their needs. In the intermediate level, for example, they will learn to ask questions, use negatives and give short answers, give opinions, make requests and offers, hypothesise, present written discourse on everyday topics and summarise ideas.
At the upper intermediate level, however, students will learn to use passives to describe processes or systems, summarise and paraphrase a text, give advice and make deductions, express wishes and regrets, give written views for and against a subject, listen for the gist as well as for specific information.
Classes, which constitute 100 contact hours, will be held at the St Augustine Campus Centre for Language Learning on Monday to Thursday from 8.30 am to 10.30 am then 11 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm. On Fridays, classes will finish at 12.30 pm. Wednesdays which are reserved for pedagogical/cultural tours of Trinidad.
