Baptists speak out against rinity Cross removal

Noting Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s appointment of a committee to oversee the change, Marrain said the NCOIBOTT was very disturbed that a name change has actually been considered since the Trinity Cross has been the national award for many years.

Marrain said the symbol of the Cross is very important to Spiritual Baptist/Shouters and other spiritual organisations, since it embodied the struggle of good against evil and signified the death of their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who died so all sins could be forgiven.

He said his argument was supported by the age-old sentiment which Christ made in his last moments, when he cried, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Marrain said the same should go for those who have decided on a new name, since any new name would discriminate against Christian-based religions.

He noted that forgiveness, which the Cross represents, can be found in any religion and this judgment would only cause a division between all the religious sects.

He said the eventual outcome would be the exact opposite to what the Cross aims to bring about among believers — to unify people through Christ’s death, burial and resurrection.

Marrain quoted the late Dr Eric Williams — “Let better sense prevail,” saying he hoped these few words would appeal to Manning.

He said he hoped Manning would eventually retract his decision. Although adamant in his views, Marrain said if Manning still wished to pursue the change, the Trinity Cross could instead be retained for Christians, and another equal and corresponding award could be given to those persons who do not want the Trinity Cross.
