Hassette leads boxing gold rush

TT’s national light welterweight champion Aaron Hassette delivered as promised when he won the division’s gold medal.

The Defence Force member defeated Hendrick Pilswijk of Guyana 15-12 on points.

Also, winning gold for TT was Stacey Ann Raymond, who defeated Arantxa Alamkan of Guadeloupe in a women’s bantamweight clash when the referee stopped the contest 42 seconds in the first round.

Kern Sinnette, the son of a former (CABA) champion Jirt Sinnette stopped Jamal Beckles of Barbados 52 seconds in the first round in the Cadets Division.

Brian George won the lightweight title when his opponent from St Lucia Kernius Charlery retired in the second round of their three round match-up. The Jackson brothers, John and Julius, also lived up to expectations.

John won the juniors welterweight title over Keithland King of Barbados when the referee Demitrius Stroude of TT stopped the bout at 36 seconds in the fourth round. His elder brother Julius was victorious over King’s compatriot Adrian Biscette in similar fashion when referee Alvin Sargeant of Bahamas stopped their middleweight contest at 1:04 seconds in the second round.

USVI’s other gold medal was secured by Jose Fuentes who scored a 3-1 points victory over Titus Paul of St Lucia in the Bantamweight Division.

Barbados finished the night with one gold and four silver medals. Their success was via the quick hands of Ronald Als, who won against Garfil Jean of St Lucia. TT referee James Beckles stopped the bout at eight seconds in the second round because Jean sustained a hand injury and could not continue. St Lucia and Guyana won two gold medals each, while Jamaica, Grenada, Dominica, Martinique and Bahamas had one victory each.

Together with Thursday’s gold medals in the women’s division which does not count for points, Trinidad and Tobago has five, Guyana three and Guadeloupe one.
