Don’t attack the Trinity

The Blessed Trinity is in fact the source of all unity. However, the country named after the Blessed Trinity is now a totally intolerant and polarised society. The politicians have ensured this. It is now to be seen how long it will take the politicians to destroy the unity created by the Soca Warriors. The rainbow of Archbishop Tutu has been blocked by dark clouds of disunity but now we have even gone one step further. We have attacked the source of unity, the Blessed Trinity.

I object to a high court judge telling me that I am indirectly discriminating against non-Christians because of the Trinity Cross. The last time a high court judge ruled against the Catholic Church was in the hijab affair.

On that occasion the judge missed the point that Catholic schools set a disciplinary note by insisting on a dress code. Children must learn to conform to rules and regulations in school in order to fit into society later on in life. Now look where discipline has reached in schools. The legal fraternity, while ruling against the Catholic Church, tries their utmost to get their children into Catholic schools. To what end? To learn how to discriminate?

The Catholic Church does not discriminate against anyone. Our schools are open to children of all religions but we insist that we retain control on what we teach and we are not going to give out condoms in our schools. Our orphanages, geriatric homes and hospices are open to people of all religions. We spend more money on the poor, needy, drug addicts, dying and abandoned children of all religions than we do on ourselves.

I consider what has transpired with the Trinity Cross as an attack against the Blessed Trinity and I take offence. There was no reason to remove the Trinity Cross. The obvious solution was to have another award acceptable to all others who objected to the Trinity Cross. Justice Jamadar has opened a can of worms. According to his rationale, we will have to change the names of a number of towns: St Joseph, San Fernando, San Raphael, St James, and San Juan just to mention a few. The name of the country would also have to be changed. So much for tolerance!

You do not insult the Blessed Trinity. For years we have said, “God is a Trini.” The natural resources of the country have not come about by accident.

They are a gift from the God after whom the country is named. Do we really believe it was by chance that the eye of a hurricane passed between Trinidad and Tobago? Why do we now attack the Blessed Trinity? The prophet Nathum says, “Yahweh is a jealous and vengeful God. Yahweh avenges. He is full of wrath; Yahweh takes vengeance on his foes, in storm and whirl wind he takes his way. He rebukes the sea and drains it. He dries up all the rivers. The mountains tremble before him, the hills reel. The earth collapses before him.” You do not attack the Blessed Trinity.
