Nobel laureate nominated for Cacique awards

Their names were announced yesterday at D’Bocas Restaurant on Chacon Street, Port-of-Spain.

Nominees also include well-known personalities including, John Andrews, Eric Barry, Penelope Spencer, and Richard Ragoobarsingh. They will compete for awards in categories which include Most Outstanding Set Design, Most Outstanding Original Script, Most Outstand-ing Actor/actress, Most Out-standing Comedic Production, and Most Outstanding Musical Director, among others.

At the launch, NDATT’s directors Cecilia Salazar and Christine Johnson explained to the audience that this year’s award ceremony theme is “Awareness.” Salazar said that the country as a whole has seen a dramatic increase of awareness: social awareness, national awareness, awareness of AIDS, and of culture.

It was fitting, she said, as those in the arts and drama should be most aware, as they are “the conscience of the people” — the ones who make people think and become more aware. Errol Fabien and Olliva Williams will both receive special awards — the Vanguard Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award, respectively.
