Chinese 200th ‘arrival’ celebrations

It was in October 1806 that 192 Chinese men arrived in Trinidad on the ship Fortitude.

History shows that this was the first organised settlement of Chinese in the Americas.

Events to celebrate this significant milestone will include exhibitions of paintings by local Chinese artists, a gala fashion show with the theme “China,” a film festival of documentaries and films by major Chinese film producers, a lecture series, publications of two books on the contributions by the Chinese and their impact on life in Trinidad and Tobago. There will also be a theatrical performance by two distinguished local Chinese artistes, performing artistes from China, Dragon Boat Racing (new to TT) and a Chinese banquet hosted by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Professor George Maxwell Richards.

The programme of activities was revealed by Dr David Picou, chairman of the Bicentennial Committee at a launch at MovieTowne on Tuesday.

The celebrations run from July 18 to October 12 starting with the Dragon Boat training and coaching. Six dragon boats will be received and launched in Trinidad to allow three months’ training before the anniversary races scheduled for October 12. Dragon Boat racing is one of the world’s oldest water sports, originating in China over 2000 years ago. The boats coming to Trinidad are sponsored by companies like Century Eslon Ltd, Digicel, Excellent Stores Ltd, Guardian Holdings Limited, The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago and Scotiabank.

According to Dr Picou the events scheduled for the celebration will promote awareness and appreciation of our life and culture which have been shaped and enriched by persons of different ethnic origins.

Dr Picou said the organisers are in discussions with the relevant authorities to have the day of the 200th anniversary be made a holiday.
