Yorke to play attacking role

“Dwight was tremendous at the World Cup playing that (midfield) role but I believe he has more to offer us in attack and that’s where I think he will be playing for Sydney FC,” said Butcher, who officially takes up his post at Sydney FC tomorrow.

“For Trinidad he had a role to play but for Sydney FC I believe I can surround him with young midfielders, which will allow him to play a major part in our attack.

“He still has plenty to offer offensively and that is where he will be when we start our season.”

Butcher, who in May replaced former Sydney FC coach Pierre Littbarski, watched all three of Trinidad and Tobago’s preliminary round matches while in Germany on assignment for the BBC.

The former England player said he also spoke to Yorke while in Germany and was confident that Yorke would be returning to the Australian A-League.

Earlier media reports had linked Yorke with a move back to England.

Yorke, 33, is expected to be at the forefront of Sydney’s efforts to defend their A-League title when the tournament kicks off August 27.

Butcher, who previously coached Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League, said he believed Yorke also needed a rest following his hectic schedule in recent months. (CMC)
