Evacuation at AG’s office

Staffers ran for shelter at the National Library in pouring rain while they stood outside the Cabildo Building, during the evacuation.

At about 10.30 am, firemen were called to the scene after they received an emergency report of fire in the building.

Firemen revealed that the foil ignited and smoke filled the kitchen on the sixth floor of the building, when an employee placed the foil in the microwave oven which is used to heat food.

Staff members stood outside the library and at other businesses on Abercromby Street for an hour while they waited for confirmation from Fire Services that they could return to the office.

A fire-tender from the Fire Services Headquarters responded to the call.

Fire Services PRO John Springle confirmed the foil paper caused smoke to fill the room.

This activated the smoke alarm. Springle said no one was injured and there was no damage reported.

Communications Specia-list at the Attorney General’s Office Rodelle Phillips denied there was ever a fire. “It was a malfunction of the fire alarm and the evacuation of the staff was a standard procedure,” Phillips ended.
