Yetming: JSCs not a waste of money
Valley made his remarks last week in a response to statements made by the chairpersons of four JSCs about the challenges facing their respective committees.
Yetming, who is chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, told Newsday that Valley’s comments were unfortunate and wondered if they reflected the feeling of the Government towards the JSCs.
He said if Valley felt the committees were a waste of money, Government was free to amend the Constitution to remove them.
However Yetming added that Government would then have to explain to the rest of the Commonwealth why it removed those bodies which serve as important watchdogs of the public interest.
Yetming said he and his fellow chairpersons (Prof Ramesh Deosaran, Wade Mark, Mary King and Parvatee Amolsingh-Ma-habir) have requested a meeting with House Speaker Barry Sinanan and Senate President Dr Linda Baboolal to discuss their concerns.
He added that they would decide on their next course of action following that meeting.
