Atherly calls it a day

But yesterday’s announcement turned dramatic when United National Congress Fyzabad MP Chandresh Sharma, stormed into City Hall. Sharma publicly declared his full fledged support for Atherly. Sharma, standing among members of the media and employees of the Corporation, said: “You are the best mayor this city has ever seen and a lot of people have asked me to tell you to re-consider your decision.” On Wednesday, Atherly wrote the secretary of each municipal district represented on the San Fernando City Corporation, informing of his withdrawal.

Among those tipped to replace Atherly are former Mayor Hazel Rogers-Dick and businessman Gregory Laing. Atherly said he was saddened by the fact that he was leaving behind an under-paid public servant staff, as well as a short-staffed San Fernando City Corporation police. Atherly, however, expressed gratitude that during his term as mayor, San Fernando was able to enjoy an almost crime-free environment.
