ROAD CAVES IN

A family of four of St Augustine narrowly escaped danger yesterday morning when the land from a road overlooking their house came tumbling down, coming to a stop at their front porch.

Yesterday, a backhoe and three trucks from the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation spent hours clearing mounds of dirt from Sandra Mutroo’s yard at Mohammed Trace, St Augustine.

Recalling the frightening incident which began Tuesday night, Mutroo said, “During the night, little by little, the earth at the side of the road began caving in and coming into our yard. And, at 5.50 yesterday morning, the whole thing came down. My three children and I had to keep sweeping water and dirt from the gallery but, thank God, the house was not damaged and no one was hurt,” Mutroo said.

The family was not so lucky the last time the land caved in on them, though.

“On June 27 last year, the landslide mashed up one whole side of the house, including the roof,” Mutroo recalled. “We got help from my brothers to build it back.” She said during heavy rains, water coming down Mohammed Trace located above their house, erodes the land at the side. She is fearful about a TTEC electricity pole planted in the landslip area just above their house.

“If that falls, is real trouble here,” the worried mom said.
