Teacher on sex charge jeered

The angry parents, some armed with placards, hurled insults at the teacher who reappeared in court to answer the charge and who was granted bail in the sum of $75,000 by magistrate Marcia Ayres-Caesar.

The magistrate also ordered the teacher to surrender his passport to the court, report to the Freeport Police Station every Thursday and should not go within 500 metres of the child’s home.

The teacher was initially denied bail after he was charged on Tuesday and spent two nights at the Remand Yard in the Port-of-Spain prison. Yesterday, curious onlookers gathered outside the court to catch a glimpse of the teacher.

The teacher, who surrendered himself to the Couva police on Tuesday morning was charged with indecent assault and taken before Ayres-Caesar later that day. He was remanded in custody pending tracing by police.

From as early as 8.30 am yesterday, the parents stood outside the court compound awaiting the arrival of the Amalgamated Prison’s truck, which brought the accused teacher to court.

As the truck approached some of the parents held up their placards and shouted while others threatened the teacher as he was taken out of the truck and into the courthouse.

The 54-year-old teacher was brought before Ayres-Caesar for the second time in three days. His attorney Darril Giles again requested bail. Court Prosecutor Sharon Corbett told the court that the accused had no previous charges or convictions. The matter was adjourned to July 24.
