Alexander, Nero strike gold

The 18-year-old lass heaved the discus a record 45.62 metres to take the gold medal in the Under-20 category.

And teammate Jodie Sutherland with a throw of 39.03 metres got the bronze in the same event.

The second gold was won by Gavyn Nero who romped home in the Boys Under-17 age-group 1500 metres.

Nero timed his run to perfection, remaining in sixth position most of the way and charging to the line in the final 200 metres, overtaking Mexicans Omar Coyopol and Julio Cesar Arias.

He won in a time of four minutes 02.95 seconds ahead of Matthew Springs of Bermuda who clocked 4:04.23.

Coyopol out-battled his compatriot Arias for the bronze medal, finishing in a time of 4:04.75.

Trinidad and Tobago also got a silver medal from distance star Pilar McShine who was narrowly beaten by Jamaican Jodi Ann Richards in the Girls Under-20 1500 metres.

The winner was timed in 4:33.77 in capturing the gold, while McShine was timed in 4:34.44.

Midway through the day’s programme there was a downpour, but this did not dampen the competition which continued last night.

The competition is the biggest ever staged in Trinidad and Tobago and is being contested in the refurbished Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The CAC Junior Champion-ships which have attracted close to 600 athletes from 28 nations are being staged in honour of Hasely Crawford, Trinidad and Tobago’s only Olympic gold medallist.

The championships continue today and end tomorrow.
