Goal City win in ‘enemy territory’

Akini Ferguson sent the visitors into the lead in the 19th minute of Sunday’s clash at scenic Speyside, and three minutes later Keron quashie increased the advantage and appeared to be on the road to an easy victory.

But Glenroy Frederick fired home near the end of the first period to pull one back for Sidey’s. And when Junior Lyons netted early into the second half, it was game on as both teams thrilled the crowd with some attacking end-to-end football.

On 70 minutes, however, Ferguson used his blinding speed to race past the Sidey’s defence to net what turned out to be the match winner.

Curtis Job got his second goal of the season, Michael Carrington and Keno Kerr scored one each for the winners, while Elon McConney and Dyke Reid got items for Lakers who were losing for the second straight time.

Bethel United rebounded from their first round defeat to edge Pepsi Hills 1-0, and Georgia also got their second victory 1-0 over division newcomers Earlbrokes.

Perennial champions St Clair’s Coaching School welcomed coach Bertille St Clair with a resounding 5-2 victory over Mason Hall Police Youth Club, who are under investigation for starting the match with only nine players.

Tonight, the league will stage a double-header at the Dwight Yorke Stadium starting at 5 pm.

Coaching School will take on Sidey’s first, and from 7 pm, then unbeaten teams Georgia and Stokelyvale will face off.

Admission for both matches is $10.

Meanwhile, in zonal competition, Bethel Uprising shut out Carnbee/Mt Pleasant 3-0; Leeds United swamped Mainstreet 7-0 but Golden Lane and 1976 FC Phoenix played to a 0-0 draw.
