AG disregards law colleagues

“My first duty is to the people of Trinidad and Tobago and to the Constitution and the Republic. My first oath is to defend that Constitution. I owe a much lesser allegiance to my colleagues in the legal profession. I wish them well as always but I will continue to do my job without fear or favour. That is the oath I have taken” .

Out of the 1,200 lawyers in the country, only two hundred participated in yesterday’s meeting. The meeting was chaired by Russell Martineau SC who is a prominent member of Chief Justice Sat Sharma’s legal team. An objection was raised to Martineau’s chairing of the team because Sharma is his client. But Martineau told the media afterwards that the majority of attorneys had no problem with it.

At the meeting lawyers voted in favour of a motion calling for the Association to seek the advice of a senior counsel on the issue of whether Jeremie committed a contempt of court when he addressed the nation on Tuesday on the Chief Justice issue.
