Mayaro football kicks off tomorrow

A total of 12 teams have registered so far for the league, but organiser Razack Jan said yesterday that several more teams are expected to come in by today.

All matches will be played under lights at the MRC, starting at 7 pm.

New champions will be crowned in 2006, since last year’s league winners, Cosmos, will not be fielding a team in the competition.

Past champions and runners-up in 2005, Mayaro Spurs, have retained most of their players and will start as favourites to reclaim the league title.

Jan said the 2006 season should be highly competitive as there has been a renewed interest in football in Mayaro with the success of former Mayaro Composite students, Collin Samuel and Anthony Wolfe, who were members of the Soca Warriors 2006 World Cup team.

Among the emerging stars who are expected to make a name for themselves in the league are Bezille Joseph and Leston Paul (Mayaro Boys), Carlon Hughes, Andy Hagley and Ryan Stewart (Mayaro Spurs), Kevin Jagdeodsingh (Manzanilla United), Timothy John (Boos United) and Deni Flores (Nariva United).
