Sara's Music will play in "Midsummer"

Many turfites take a delight in berating owner-breeder-trainer Maniram “Boboy” Maharaj, but truth be told there were only two more capable than him in getting a horse ready for a particular event in the late great Eric “Colt” Durant, the “Maestro of Marabella”, and retired trainer now Trinidad and Tobago Racing Authority boss Joe Hadeed.

The manner in which the gelded son of Java In Flight/Indian Music disposed of a field comprising several three-year-olds who hold the “Midsummer” engagement in the Bookmakers Association Guineas on May 30, the first of the jewels in the local Triple Crown, suggests he will not be denied.

That day, he had Jacobite 2 1/4 lengths behind him with Sing The Blues third, Angle Of Music fourth, and Greek Princess, Windjammer, Phantomoftheopera, Bold Mover and Millionaire all in the van.

There was a cloud over Sara’s Music just short of two weeks ago when it was reported he suffered a slight colic.

But “Boboy” used his vast experience in clearing this up very speedily, and the wily old fox has his charge blooming like a rose again.

Connections of the well-bred Godspell (Freshly Squeezed/Spellbound) are very sweet on this gelding who was “put away” for the “Midsummer” after a convincing victory over 1750 metres, but on that day he beat nothing and must come on tremendously to end the hope of “Boboy” and his team of landing the Triple Crown this time around.

Fact is, however, none of the runners have gone further than 1750 metres except Sara’s Music when winning the Guineas over 1800 metres, and he too has been specially prepared for this race.

It is now history that in 1988 “Boboy” led them all a Song N’ Dance in taking the Derby on that rain-drenched Queen’s Park Savannah.

Weeks before the race he was telling all who would listen his horse would win the Blue Riband event, but they doubted.

Now he is back in that same mood again, and as it is said in all-fours, marker stand by!
