Another Honore gets US ‘schol’

At age 17 years and one month, Honore has been awarded a four-year scholarship estimated at US$120,000 to attend the Norfolk State University in Virginia USA.

In receiving the scholarship, Honore also became the third member of the Honore family to earn a volleyball scholarship to a US university.

She follows her brother Marc Anthony (St Francis University, Pennsylvania) who became the first local men’s player to be granted a scholarship.

Her older sister Nadiege Honore is entering her second year at Siena College New York.

Honore was recently named to the national junior women’s volleyball team and is currently part of the Trinidad and Tobago squad currently competing at the NORCECA Volleyball Championships in Mexico.

All three siblings are members of national teams.

Honore, like her older sister also excelled in athletics, reaching the finals of the Secondary Schools High Jump Championships in 2004.

But it is in the sport of volleyball that she has excelled earning several awards at beach and indoor versions of the game.

Honore is a graduate of the Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive. She graduated with six CXC subjects before going on to achieve a high score in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) that qualified her for a scholarship with a Division I University.

The young player was a graduate of the special Talent Development Programme conducted by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.

She was among a select group of ten players who attended a two-week training programme in Cuba in 2004.

Under the guidance of Cuban coach Ann Maria Estevez and Starlings club coach Nado Danwantee Deonath, the talented setter/defence specialist has emerged as one of the top junior players in the country.

Her achievements over the years included three consecutive annual awards for outstanding performance with her local club Starlings.

In August 2005, Honore attended a special three-week volleyball camp at the World Volleyball Training Centre in Huguenot, New York. oShe received an award as the Most Improved Player and received special training from top coaches from different countries.

Honore was “scouted” by several university coaches from the United States but accepted the offer from Allison Millete, coach of Norfolk State University, who visited Trinidad and Tobago in 2005.
