Coastguard meets shot fisherman’s family

Newsday learnt that since the incident, the TT Coastguard had planned to visit the Mohammed family at their Lallo Road, Charlieville home, but avoided doing so for security reasons. The shooting triggered-off a protest by family members and residents of the area.

Shazad’s father – Fareed, 49, brother (Shazad’s) Sharaid, 20, and Shazad’s wife Nalini Mohammed, 20, arrived at the attorneys’ offices at about 9 am yesterday.

Ramoutar and Braithwaite came to the offices minutes later and held a 45-minute discussion with the family in the presence of both attorneys.

Mohammed told Newsday that he was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting. He said that the TT Coastguard would complete its investigations into the incident by next week. He added that Ramoutar and Braithwaite assured the family that the investigations would be conducted thoroughly and without bias.

“I am eagerly anticipating the outcome of the investigation,” Rattiram said. Fareed commented as he left the attorney’s office, “No one knows how I am feeling. I want the truth to come out because I know my son, somebody is responsible for putting him where he is today.”

Fareed said that since the incident occurred, Shazad’s wife Nalini gave up her job to be at her husband’s bedside. Fareed said that he and his wife Shalima, had to make frequent visits to a doctor for high blood pressure.
