La Brea get first SFA football victory

They defeated Palo Seco FC 2-1 at the Petrotrin Velodrome on Sunday last.

Goals for the La Brea team came from former national Under-17 striker Andre Alexis in the seventh minute and Chad Joseph in the 66th to emerge victorious and despite a goal from veteran striker Dexter Cyrus for Palo Seco in the 78th minute.

Alexis’ goal basically set up the win for the La Brea All Stars and killed all chances their opponents had of coming away with a point.

Last week, the La Brea team lost their opening match of the 2006 season 1-2 to Penal FC and were determined to pull off the win at the weekend.

With this being their first campaign in the SFA the All Stars are hopeful of repeating a performance that gave them a place in the top three of the La Brea Community and Environs Football League recently.

They are also the only team from La Brea area playing at the championship level in the southland. Their partnership with Alutrint has proven to be a worthwhile investment for both parties where football development is concerned.

Three weeks ago Alutrint Ltd, a company that is majority owned by government and is based at the new industrial estate in La Brea, funded the La Brea Club with the aim of community development.

The youthful squad is coached by former strike squad defender Floyd Lawrence and former national youth player Ainsley Weekes.

Manager of the team is Lyndon Cave who himself is a former footballer, now in sports administration.

Weekes said he was very pleased with the performance of the team, adding that it was also a very good result for them playing away from home.

“We have a very young team and five of our players are under 20 but we are building for the future,” Weekes said.

He stressed that while they have a lot to learn, he believes that with the discipline and the desire to succeed that the team has, he is certain that they will do well.
