Independence Day fireworks

Animals- particularly dogs and cats are often scared of the noise of fireworks as their hearing is more acute than that of a human. Terrified animals often escape from yards normally considered secure. They may run onto the roads causing danger to themselves and to other road users. If possible, bring your pets into the house during the fireworks display or, alternatively, put it in an outside washroom or storeroom.

Try putting a radio or TV on in the same room. Best of all, stay with your animals during the display.

Do not chain a dog in the yard as it is likely to strangle itself on the chain while trying to escape. Most important of all, make sure that your dog is wearing a collar and ID tag showing one or two telephone contact numbers.

If he does escape, there is at least a chance that some other animal lover will find him and telephone you. If he doesn’t have a number he doesn’t have a chance.
