Preparing for hurricanes

There are plans and systems in place that will be activated to ensure that persons are assisted as necessary. Measures are being instituted across the various ministries of Government to strengthen their capabilities to withstand major hazard impacts and to be able to quickly recover and provide services.

We wish to emphasise that individuals should seek to ensure that their homes and businesses are prepared to face storms and hurricanes, and that this is the responsibility of the individual and not the government.

If these preparedness measures are undertaken, the impact of hurricanes and storms will be reduced. Further, once individual’s preparedness mechanisms are in place there will be speedier recovery.

The government through the ODPM and its partner agencies will ensure a timely response and provision of emergency relief and recovery assistance. Again, we wish to emphasise that how prepared we are as a nation is a combination of government’s preparedness and individual’s preparedness.
