Lara leads Windies in September tri-series

West Indies’ participation in the series, scheduled to be played in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, had been in doubt over disagreements over payments to players. “On this occasion the invitations have been sent directly to the players, for in spite of our best efforts it has not been possible to reach agreement with their representative Mr Dinanath Ramnarine,” the WICB said in a statement on their website.

“In the event that any of the players do not accept the invitation by August 10, a suitable replacement will be chosen,” it added.

The WICB handed out individual tour contracts directly to the selected players after negotiations between Ramnarine and WICB representative Deryck Murray broke down.

Brian Lara was retained as captain. Earlier this week the left-hander tendered a public apology for his outburst on selection policies after the final Test defeat to India last month which handed the visitors their first series win in the Caribbean in 35 years.

“I recognise that I broke the confidence placed in me as West Indies captain by my overreaction during and after the fourth Test against India and I apologise to all concerned,” he said in a statement.
