CoP promises probe into police brutality

Yesterday, the commissioner said he was awaiting the outcome of that investigation from the Southern Division in San Fernando.

Paul said he expects the report shortly and has promised to deal with it.

Choon, 49, a father of two, was allegedly attacked by officers of the Oropouche Police Station on Friday morning while on his way to his Ackbar Trace, Old Siparia Road home at 1.30 am.

Choon claimed he was kicked about the body as though he was a human football. He said he was also doused with kerosene and threatened to set ablaze at the police station.

Attorney Anand Ramlogan has also called for an immediate investigation by an independent body of the Police Service into the police attack on Pundit assistant, Rabindra Choon of Oropouche.

Ramlogan, who is representing Choon, yesterday suggested that a Scotland Yard cop or an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigations probe the matter.

“I do not condone police investigating police because the Police Service does not have a good track record of investigating police brutality,” Ramlogan said.

Ramlogan said he intends to write Commissioner of Police, Trevor Paul, on the matter.

The incident surrounding Choon’s attack by the police sparked a protest on Saturday, in which scores of villagers came out in their numbers and gathered at Avocat Junction to demonstrate their disgust into the incident.

They made a public call for justice and pleaded with Paul to investigate the matter personally and swiftly.
