Salandy launches campaign today

The 19-year-old undefeated welterweight boxer is using Aqua Aerobics which involves under-water sparring and a multitude of non-contact exercises. Now based at the Biomel Gym in Arima, Salandy runs approximately seven and a half miles to the ASA Wright Nature Centre in Blanchisseuse on a daily basis.

In the Aqua Aerobics segment of her training she undergoes several rounds of water sparring under training guru Dr Merril John Simon and international matchmaker Buxo Potts.

This is a new technique that is bought into the equation to ensure maximum strength and endurance for her upcoming fight on September 15 in Skinner Park, San Fernando, said her handlers. Salandy will be the first Trinidad and Tobago boxer to fight for a unified World Boxing Association (WBA)/World Boxing Council (WBC) title.

Her opponent Holewyne is a Hawaii-born fighter who has been based in Texas but has moved her camp to New Jersey to prepare for the fight.

Holewyne is 37 years old and is regarded as a very experienced campaigner who is embracing the opportunity to fight for the unified title, the first such opportunity she has received in her career. The spotlight will be on Salandy today when from 5 pm her campaign for the unified world title will be launched at the Biomel Gym, corner of O’Meara Road and the Priority Bus Route in Arima. Potts said yesterday that the public is invited to witness this historic occasion.
