Remand prisoner refused treatment

The accused who is reportedly afflicted with a terminal illness and who is before the court on narcotics charges, told a shocked McKenzie, presiding in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, that personnel at the clinic refused to treat him because he is a “Trinidad patient.”

At a previous court hearing, the man told the court that he needed certain treatment and medication and sought the court’s assistance since he remained in remand (police custody) since no one stood bail for him.

It was under this circumstance that the court ordered him to be sent to the Tobago clinic. However, McKenzie expressed concern on Thursday when the accused said he was being refused treatment.

McKenzie noted that public health institutions are supposed to provide attention/treatment for members of the public, especially in a situation where such treatment has been ordered by the court.

“I cannot understand this. Someone has been sent on the court’s instruction for treatment and this is being refused? I will have to investigate this matter,” McKenzie said. She subsequently adjourned the matter.
