Daniel, Adams trophy for top boxer

The event has attracted 86 amateur boxers from 11 clubs and will be staged on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.

The Adams family, through brothers Carlton and Francis, has donated a trophy to almost every boxing event in TT since the death of their brother in 2003. Ancil Adams passed away in England but his last fight was against Daniel which he lost.

The amateur boxers will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals along with valuable vouchers in 12 weight divisions ranging from pinweight to super heavyweight.

The Golden Gloves Championships is organised by the TT Amateur Boxing Association (T&TABA) and Gold Medal Sports Company.

Among the clubs taking part are: Revival, Tigers, White Eagles and Sand City Gyms of Siparia, St Michael’s School for Boys, St Jude’s Home, the Youth Training Camp, Phoenix of Princes Town, Cosmic of Marabella, Bio Mel Gym of Arima and Defence Force.

Top male and female boxers who will receive the HA Clarke Award named after the popular promoter, administrator and trainer who died five years ago.

The outstanding coach of the championships will get the Bertrand Legall Trophy. Legall is a former national champion and coach who operated out of the Woodbrook Boxing Club.

The top male boxer will also collect the Gentle Daniel Trophy, donated by the Adams and Daniel families in memory of the late boxers. The champion club will also get a lucrative voucher.

The Golden Gloves Championships are supported by Gatorade, Courts T&T Ltd, Carib, Ma Pau Private Members Club and T&TEC.

It will start at 6 pm on opening day on Friday, 4 pm on Saturday, with the finals starting 4 pm on the last day on Sunday.

Admission is $20 and children Under-12 years of age will be admitted free.
