Fuad: Put Ramesh in Senate

“I am therefore calling for more firepower to be added to the Senate in the persons of Mr Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, former attorney general and champion of civil and human rights and Mr Anand Ramlogan, a young, dynamic and charismatic attorney.”

He said Maharaj and Ramlogan had each shown that they have what it takes to hold the Government to account and highlight its misdeeds.

Khan said Maharaj must not be conveniently used by the UNC, but be utilised for the benefit of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

“Instead of having Mr Maharaj appear on party platforms when it suits their agenda, his talents, experience and tenacity must be utilised in a coherent and objective manner, otherwise this continued ‘window dressing’ will all be for nought.”

He urged, “Put Ramesh in the Senate to jam the PNM.”

Khan said he has never taken sides in the rivalry in the UNC between Persad-Bissessar and Dookeran, and was not doing so now.

He said he had previously called for the UNC to readmit Ramesh after the 18-18 tie of the 2001 general elections.

Would he back Maharaj even further than the Senate?

Khan declined to say how far he might be willing to back Maharaj who some see as a contender to lead the fractured opposition party, simply saying: “I’m taking things one day at a time.”
