Golden Grove prison power less

As a result, magistrates presiding in the four courts had to adjourn the cases. Only accused persons out on bail, along with 12 people who were arrested on Monday night and were kept at police stations, appeared before the magistrates. Even as Commissioner of Prisons John Rougier held a media briefing at the Golden Grove prison yesterday to announce the confiscation of banned items from prisons, there was still no power. The area where the briefing took place had electricity.

Rougier told Newsday the power was out at Remand and the problem stemmed from faulty breakers.

The prison’s generators could not provide electricity for where people awaiting trials are held. Later in the afternoon, Rougier disclosed that power had been restored.
