Beetham residents

Residents vowed to remain under the tent until someone from the Government gives them information on when the centre will be built.

Several residents even said they will sleep under the tent next Monday and Tuesday night as a form of protest. The tent has been pitched next to a basketball court in Phase II, Beetham Estate.

Traffic along both the Beetham Highway and Priority Bus Route (PBR) was snarled for several hours last Thursday after angry residents blocked the PBR and highway with burning debris. They went so far as to set a boat alight and place it across the highway.

A protestor yesterday said police told them that “something positive” will take place within two weeks.

In the meantime, another protestor said, a Good Samaritan donated 50 chairs to be used by the residents to start a programme to assist students living in the area with their homework as well as remedial studies.

“Out of such a bad but necessary protest which took place last week (the blocking of the PBR and highway), something good has come out of this,” the protestor said as she referred to the donated chairs.

The resident said some of the subjects they would like to start in this “home lesson programme” are English Literature and Computer Studies.

The programme will start under the tent once a proper curriculum pertaining to studies is organised. Once the community centre is constructed, these studies as well as other positive activities will take place.

Beetham resident Juliette Davy said she will allow somoe of the students to use a place she owns to carry out their computer studies classes.
