TT performers win 40 gold medals

The artistes created a stir when they presented one of the largest contingents from any country at the parade of nations. They went on to win the “Best Parade” at the opening ceremony. Their presentation was done in red, white and black, with a touch of glitter to represent TT. The contingent eventually won the title for the second largest team and also the largest from the Caribbean to sign up for this competition.The team won a total of 72 medals — 40 gold, 22 silver, and ten bronze, also seven special industry awards and ‘Best Costuming.’

Noriega said that she was extremely proud of the performers, who competed against 51 other countries. She said they displayed a high level of discipline at all times and supported each other throughout the entire festival. “Everyone was geared for competition.

They spent every moment practising and grooming themselves to go before the judges and we had success at every stop we made,” she said.

Tobagonian actress Glenda Rose Layne won gold in the ‘Best Actress Open’ competition for her one-minute monologue entitled, “The Stalker.” The plot written by Layne was based on a mad woman’s encounter with her shadow which she felt was a stalker following her wherever she went.

Noriega said the experience was quite enjoyable the performers proved that the country can compete against the world in the performing arts.

“I am confident that producers and other US-based movie enthusiasts will be making the journey to this country in search of material for any one of their projects,” she said.

The president of the WCPA, Griff O’Neil who addressed the performers said that the competition, now in its tenth year has come far closer to levelling the playing field between athletes and creative performers.

The goal of this endeavour, he said, has always been to show the world that artistes deserve the same scope of recognition and similiar career perks that athletes have been allowed in the US and other countries.

Carivog is yet to call a meeting of all their winners.

The organising body will be looking at ways to show appreciation to the local gold medal winners.
