CAFRA youth group formed

The youth group which started four months ago has not had its official launching but Williams, 24, hopes that it would happen soon.

“We are hoping to get sponsorship and with that we could have more sessions for computer literacy, seminars and talent shows that would allow women to express themselves on issues that affect them,” she said.

The youth group, which meets every two weeks, has 14 members with ages ranging from 12 to 30 and Williams is hoping for more to join. “It is a place where you get to know yourself and learn how to deal with particular situations,” she said. Schools that are associated with the youth group are San Juan Junior Secondary, Arima Senior Comprehensive, El Dorado Secondary and Five Rivers Junior Secondary. “We hope to go into more schools to reach out to more young women,” Williams said.

“So far we have learned rapso with Brother Resistance and poetry with Jah Jah. We teach them not to discriminate anyone among many other things,” Williams explained.

During the meetings, she said, “We discuss issues that affect women in society like sexual health and rights. We try to make them feel better about themselves.” She continued: “It is not about bashing men. It is about the knowledge you gain so you can use it for any situation in the future. It’s basically a whole learning experience.”

Williams describes the group as a place where women are able to grow. “With the knowledge they acquire they would be able to share it with other people,” she said.
