WIBA boxing champ Ramnarine to quit

Ramnarine’s manager Bharrath Ramoutar revealed that the fighter is fed-up of the lack of support given to her by government and corporate Trinidad and Tobago.

At 28, Ramnarine is the holder of the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) title, after her victory over Guyana’s Stephanie George two months ago at the Central Regional Indoor Sporting Complex, Chaguanas.

Ramoutar yesterday claimed, government refused to support Ramnarine for the card, although they were made to submit letter after letter.

“It seems as though there is nothing to achive where boxing is concerned here in Trinidad and Tobago.

“Ramnarine is committed and has worked tremendously hard to reach where she is presently,” Ramoutar said disappointingly.

He pointed out that Ramnarine may have to chart her career in another direction.

“Probably she will have to go back to her job or return to her studies and focus on going into another area of her life,” he noted.

Ramnarine who had been training at the time, has been a role model to many young budding boxers in her gym, but has been receiving nothing for her achievements.

“Even the members of the gym have gotten disenchanted after looking at the way Ramnarine is being treated,” Ramoutar added.

He describes Ramnarine as the first woman world title holder in the twin-island republic when she defeated Yvonne Capels on March 28 last year.

Her encounter with Halmich who is considered a “must-win” in Germany is being looked at as a money making assignment.

“The fact is that the fight will be a payday for Ramnarine, and we all know that it is hard to get a payday here in Trinidad,” Ramoutar.

The fight will be a chance for another world title for Ramnarine after her exploits which has so far earned her the WIBA title.

Halmich has held the title for the past decade with an impressive record of 50 wins and one draw and one loss each.

Ironically, the talented Halmich has been looked at by Ramnarine, as one of the world’s better female boxers.

She is also the most popular female boxer in the German nation and is considered the Michael Jordan of women’s boxing there.

The talented Trinidad and Tobago boxer will leave today with her team which consist of Ramoutar 3and Jason Ramoutar.

Ramoutar said, “People has been asking me why Ramnarine is going up against a fighter with such a record. But realistically Ria has nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

He pointed out that Ramnarine’s expected resignation will also put him in a situation where he will also have to look at other avenues of surviving, but said Ria will gave a good account of herself and will probably return home with the title.
