Shopkeeper’s daughter escapes abductor

As news of Beharry’s kidnapping spread through several villages in Moruga, residents immediately launched a search over a three-mile radius, combing forests and thick vegetation.

Beharry is the daughter of the owners of Chittie’s Hardware and General Contractors, at Moruga Main Road, Moruga.

After almost five hours of searching with a combined police unit from the Princes Town and San Fernando police stations and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, the girl was found. She was spotted running on a privately owned Petrotrin road, near Guayaguayare. Her family believes that the kidnapper released Beharry because he suspected that search parties were hot on his heals.

Yesterday, her mother, Chitricka Beharry, thanked the villagers for their support. “I felt happiness knowing I had so much support. We does live good with everybody.”

A male relative said it was at about 1.45 pm on Sunday when Beharry was kidnapped. He said Beharry was driving along La Fortune Road, La Savanne, on her way home.

Her four-year-old niece was in the passenger’s seat, the relative said. Almost a mile before reaching home, he said, Beharry heard something hit the vehicle. She stopped to investigate when a man approached and snatcher her.

The relative said the four-year-old girl began to bawl as the kidnapper dragged Beharry off into the bushes. The little girl ran away screaming, until she met construction labourers working on a bridge and told them what had happened.

At an isolated track off Edward Trace, a couple saw the kidnapper dragging Beharry across the roadway, and immediately called Beharry’s family and the police to the area.

With the villagers and police, hot on his heels the kidnapper loosened his grip on Beharry and she slipped away from his clutches.
