11 SEA students honoured

The students, who are all children of members of the organisation, each received $200 in cash and a folder that would be of help to them when they enter secondary schools on Monday.

The fortunate students were — Sarah Balkaran, Kyle Diamond, Wazim Juman, Rachel Lalchan, Shivanan Maraj, Dora Pulchan, Ravi Ramdass, Kyle Ramdeo, Shannen Ramesar, Sarekha Ramessar, and Steffon Rojan.

Desmond Baxter, president of the Credit Union, said that the union had always identified itself with outreach programmes aimed at helping members.

He stressed the need to expose children to the Junior section of the Credit Union movement and said that the relevant training gained would be of immense value in life’s journey.

Baxter said that the overall help that the Credit Union had given to children of members who had passed Common Entrance and the SEA Examination over the years had amounted to $519,786.06 since 1991.

The breakdown is —

1991-1999 - 1159 students - $382.286.38.

2000 - 191 students - $65,890.82

2001 -112 students - $33,600.00

2002 - 100 students - $30,000.00

2003 - none — since this was the year that saw the clo
sure of Caroni (1975) Limited.

2004 - 19 students - $4,391.09

2005 - 6 students - $1,386.66

2006 - 11 students - $2,231.11.
Baxter encouraged parents to let their children become involved in the Junior Credit Union Section “as this is an excellent form of financial training for life.”
