Meeting to discuss prisons officers’ problems cancelled

Purpose of the meeting was to sort out the problems confronted by the prisons officers, who yesterday continued their third day of a sick-out — a form of protest over the lax security measures at the prison.

However, Newsday learned that six officers reported for duty at the Remand Yard Centre on Tuesday. Because of the staff shortage senior officers had to be assisted by inmates and recruits to feed the prisoners.

Association president, Michael Williams, told Newsday that the officers have made a decision that they will not return to work until matters are resolved.

Williams said that he did not care to discuss what strategy the prisons officers will use to clear the prisons of weapons, if and when they return to work.
