Caribs, Police in rugby final
On Sunday Caribs got past Harvard 37-20 at the Savannah
One Ground at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain featured one semi-final.
In the other semi-final Police battled past a determined Eastern Graduates on Savannah Three Ground.
Police will contest their first ever Marcus Minshall Cup final while Caribs will be going after a hat-trick of victories.
In a match-up that generated tremendous interest Caribs faced some tense moments early on.
Harvard flanker Nicholas Placide’s unconverted try and captain Jerome O’Brien’s penalty conversion cut the Caribs lead to two points at 10-8.
However, two unconverted tries by Ronald Silverthorne and Andy Sharpe gave the “Beer Boys” the early advantage.
Caribs then took control midway in the first half with Andy Sharpe’s second try which resulted from an angled run that caught the Harvard defence napping. Carib went to the break 22-8 up and Harvard faced a tall order to get their Marcus Minshall hopes back on track.
On the resumption a fired up Harvard seemed up to the task but Caribs with the experience of Brendan O’Farrell at fly-half and buoyed by national coach Sean O’Farrell joining the fray raced to a 37-8 lead.
Harvard’s industry was rewarded with two late tries, one the result of a wonderful display of running rugby that brought a huge cheer from the large contingent of their supporters and neutral fans. But at the end it was a clinical and composed display by Caribs that saw them to yet another Minshall Cup final.
