North leads Inter Zone cricket

North, with a host of young talent leads the zonal competition with five points after registering victories over North East and South.

They are followed by Central, South, North East and Tobago in the standings.

In Round Two at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, North East compiled a massive score of 305 with West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Kieron Pollard scoring a hurricane 165 of 91 balls.

Former national player Aneil Kanhai was the pick of the North bowlers with figures of four wickets for 40 runs. North in reply closed on 187 for six after 30 overs due to rain with National Youth batsman Mario Belcon getting 77 and Kanhai scoring 30. North were fortunate to be adjudged winners against North East on a faster run rate.

At Chaguanas, Central defeated Tobago by two wickets with Shazam Babwah giving an impressive all-round performance. Batting first Tobago posted a meagre total of 127 with national off spinner Amit Jaggernauth taking three wickets for 30 runs, Anderson Bryce with three for 16 and Babwah taking two for 23. Lincoln Roberts scored a quickfire 26 but could not carry on. Central raced to victory scoring 131 for the loss of eight wickets in 30 overs with Central batsmen Shazam Babwah and Manoj Surju both scoring 24 to secure a two-wicket victory.

In the other match at Powergen Ground in Penal, South defeated South East in a low scoring affair. South East posted a total of 171 with Rondell Ramlochan, 31, Samuel Badree, 29 leading the scorers.

Kenton Thompson had outstanding figures of four wickets for 29 runs with his off-spin. South, in replying were given a revised target of 135 in 37 overs due to rain affecting play.

Gregory Mahabir led with a captain’s innings of 31 and was assisted by Clarke Road batsman Sean Siloch scoring 29 to lead south to a two-wicket victory.

In Round three, at Powergen Ground, Penal, South East scored a massive 178-run victory over Tobago. South East were leading with centuries by national batsmen Jason Mohammed, 151, and Denzil James, 149. Mohammed’s knock consisted of nine fours and five sixes while James’ knock contained 13 fours and two sixes as the pair put on a partnership of 312 runs.

They led South East to a mammoth total of 335 for the loss of four wickets from their allotted 50 overs. Tobago in their response were never in the game as they were quickly reduced to 49 for the loss of four wickets with off spinner Timothy Surujbally doing the early damage. They would go on to close on 157 for the loss of nine wickets with Christian Adams scoring 53 not out. Surujbally got figures of five wickets for 24 runs and West Indies Under-19 bowler Rishi Bachan taking two wickets for 43 runs.

At the Queen’s Park Oval, North completed a 92-run victory over South. Mario Belcon led the way for North with a well played knock of 76. He was assisted by Earnil Ryan and Darren Bravo scoring 39. South closed on 134 for the loss of six wickets with Hollister Pajotte scoring 34 and Captain Gregory Mahabir 35. Rishard Harris did the damage as he took two wickets for 33 runs giving North a comfortable victory. The other match between North East and Central at the Inshan Ali Cricket Ground, Preysal was abandoned due to a water-logged outfield. Both teams received one point each due to the result. Round 4 action will continue today and will see leaders North take on Tobago at Shaw Park, Tobago.

Unbeaten Central will come up against South East at Preysal who will be without national batsman Sherwin Ganga who is out for three weeks due a torn hamstring. South will be at home to North East at Powergen Ground in Penal.
