‘New’ Warriors get MLS picks

That’s the question on the lips of football fans watching matches in the regional football tournament. Roberts was on Thursday drafted by MLS club Toronto FC in the 2007 Supplemental Draft.

Also drafted was Osei Telesford by the Chicago Fire. Being drafted does not necessarily mean they will be contracted as they will undergo a trial period before anything is officially done on paper. It is a similar process undergone by Anthony Noreiga last season with Kansas City Wizards.

Roberts is currently being also eyed by Dutch club Roda FC. Both Roberts and Telesford said they felt good about the selection but are yet to make a decision on the offer, preferring to focus fully on the Digicel Cup.

“It’s always an honour to be recognised whether it be MLS or a team in Europe,” Roberts said yesterday. “Hopefully I can work things out and then I’ll know definitely where I will end up. The MLS is always a possibility because I have played in the States for four years but there are also some other options. Right now I am focusing on the Digicel Cup and then I’ll take things from there,” he said.

Telesford sang a similar tune. “It feels good because there are a lot of players out there and it’s a big stage (Chicago). I’m not sure what I will be doing as yet but I see it as an accomplishment. Right now the focus is this tournament and then I will have some further talks about the offer,” said the former Joe Public player.

Meanwhile, Roberts, a 23-year-old of Trincity noted that he has been around local football from the youth level but was never really one of those who caught the eye or grabbed headlines in the local press for numerous goals or fancy footwork during his days at Fatima College.

He played at the Intercol level with the North Zone team during 1998-2001 after transferring from El Dorado Junior Sec.
