Grand farewell for Denoon
“To know him was to love him. Lennox was not perfect but the good things he did in his lifetime far outweighed the human shortcomings,” said his youngest brother Wentworth Denoon as he delivered the eulogy.
“History would record that his contributions were for the benefit of Tobago and its people and he was extremely proud of the fact that he would be remembered as the last chairman of the Tobago House of Assembly, a post which has now been replaced with the title of Chief Secretary.”
Denoon was said to have lived a full life having served as a primary school teacher, principal, schools supervisor and sports administrator, as well as a community and cultural activist.
The third and last THA chairman, Denoon, 77, died on Friday afternoon at the Scarborough Regional Hospital after a short illness and was reported to have undergone major surgery recently.
He had served as chairman of the then National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR)-controlled THA for two terms (1988-1996) but was not considered for re-election by the NAR at the end of the 1992-96 term and quietly slipped back into private life where he was often referred to as the “missing link in the THA chain.”
Hochoy Charles then took over as the the first Chief Secretary of the THA.
Denoon’s contribution to Tobago’s development was highly praised by current THA Chief Secretary Orville London and former Assemblyman Cecil Caruth.
Denoon leaves to mourn his wife of 50 years, Olga and their three children, Robert, Judy and Cheryl. He will be cremated at the St James crematorium in Trinidad on Friday.
