Soca diva Nadia sings chutney

Earlier this year Nadia was a favourite in International Soca Monarch Competition, placing second and third respectively in the Power and Groovy categories of the competition.

Following her success in that show, she said: “It feels good to know I have the support of the public. While I know this is a competition, it is not all about competing for me. I want to be known as an artiste who has brought something positive to our culture. I love writing and singing.”

According to show promoter Randy Glasgow, Nadia is a force to reckon with in the world of soca music.

Radio announcer Matthew Haven said Nadia’s early releases are certainly giving her a good start for the Carnival of 2008. Local fans have been requesting her chutney soca track.

“This fusion was certainly something I have been yearning to create throughout the years and finally, the track became a reality,” she explained, adding that it is a true representation of the music and people of TT.

When asked whether she will be entering the chutney competition for the Carnival 2008 Nadia said whatever comes her way she will enter.

“ I like to challenge myself, I like to try new things and I’ve just always wanted to take my music to that boundary- crossing level.”

Another exciting new release is‘Caribbean Girl’, written by Batson and close friend, Mr. Vybe, which has been getting airplay in Toronto, Canada.

Nadia proved her skill as a writer when she composed soca hits such as ‘Carnival Feeling’ which was performed by Roy Cape vocalist Rita Jones, and Michelle Sylvester’s ‘Face Me’. As a solo artist she scored with her zouk-tinged 2006 Carnival hit, ‘One Island ‘which carried her all the way to the prestigious Soca Monarch Finals. Nadia earned an impressive fourth place then.

During the summer of 2006 she wrote‘Flames’ for Barry Chandler, lead singer of the band Jabae, who copped the Party Monarch and Road March titles in Barbados.

In addition ‘Expose’ a song she penned for El A Kru lead vocalist Tizzy placed second in Antigua’s Party Monarch competition.
