Top sprinters lead medal chase for TT

Also on the team are Hammer Thrower Candice Scott and Shot Putter Cleopatra Borel-Brown who are expected to boost the team’s chances of returning home with more medals than they did the last time around.

The country’s lone medal winner at the last Games in Athens, Greece swimmer George Bovell III has also been included in the team for the August 8 to 24 competition.

He will compete in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle events. The list of swimmers also includes his younger brother Nicholas Bovell and Shantelle Mc Lean who will also take part in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle.

Thompson produced three sub-ten performances in the 100 metres at the American NCAA Track and Field Championship a few months ago while Brown (100) and Burns (100) have been quickly catching form- at the right time.

The trio will also compete at the 4x100 metres event, along with Keston Bledmann and Emmanuel Callender.

The team is being described as the best prepared TT team ever by TT Olympic Committee officials.

Also on the team are Aaron Armstrong who will compete in the 200 metres and 4x100 metres race, Rondell Sorillo (200), Renny Quow, in the 400 metres and the 4x400 metres relay.

Others are Ato Stephens (400, 4x400m), Stan Waithe (4x400m), Zwede Hewitt (4x400m), Cowin Mills (4x400m), Jovon Toppin (4X400m) and Mekil Thomas who will contest the 110 metre hurdles.

Meanwhile Kelly Ann Baptiste leads the women track contingent and will have the support of Semoy Hackett (100, 4x100m), Sasha Sprinter- Jones (100, 4x100m), Wanda Hutson (4x100m), Monique Cabral (4x100m), Ayanna Hutchinson (4x100m).

Others Aleesha Barber (100m Hurdles), Josanne Lucas (400m Hurdles), Rhonda Watkins who will contest the Long Jump.

In Shooting Roger Daniel is the lone athlete and he will contest the 10 metre Pistol event while Dexter St Louis will attempt to fly the country’s flag in Table Tennis.

His coach will be Rheann Chung with Reeza Burke as the Manager.

The country’s lone gold medalist at the Olympics Hasely Crawford is the Olympic Ambassador while Michael Valentine is the Chef de Mission and Wendell Labastide is the Assistant General Team Manager.

Eight official will travel with the Track and Field team to the games, they comprise George Commissiong (Manager), Dr Ian Hypolite (Assistant Manager), Gunness Persad (Coach/ Sprints and Relays), Clayton Walkes (Coach/ Sprints and Relays), John Andalcio (Coach Hurdles), Nadine Hamid (Coach/ Throws), Heathcliff Thorne (Coach/ Jumps), David Cumberbatch (Massage Therapist).

Bovell will be coached by Matthew Macedo and Managed by his father George Bovell II.
