Lady Hochoy celebrated at Assumption

Hundreds of mourners, including persons from the Lady Hochoy Home for the differently-abled, gathered at the church from as early as 10 am to pay their respects.

Also present was former President Sir Ellis Clarke and former First Lady Zalayhar Hassanali.

Speaking with Newsday, a distant relative of Lady Hochoy expressed disgust over the absence of Prime Minister, Patrick Manning and other Government Ministers, as well as members of the Opposition parties.

“It is very distasteful of them that none of them came to the funeral. Not a single member of the Government and not a single member of the Opposition, seeing that they have a great chance in winning this elections. Lady Hochoy was part of history, and no one sought to respect that by just attending her funeral,” the relative said.

Lady Hochoy, nee Huggins, was born on September 17, 1910 in Ste Madeleine. She was the wife of Trinidad’s first Governor General, Sir Solomon Hochoy. She was the founder of the Lady Hochoy Home and was instrumental in developing several social and religious projects bearing her name.

Unable to maintain her former home at Alcazar Street, Port-of-Spain, she turned it over to the Carmelite nuns and moved in with her adopted daughter, Joyce Chinasing.

Lady Hochoy was also the recipient of several international awards, including one from the Pope.

She was buried in the Botanical Gardens in Port-of-Spain.
