More psychiatric tests for convicted killer Chuck Attin

Attin, who was just 16 years old when he was party to the rape and murder of two housewives at Westmoorings, yesterday reappeared before Justice Anthony Carmona for review of his sentence.

The court was presented with a social report prepared by Welfare Officer, Hayden Walcott, from the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca, where Attin is serving his sentence.

Attin, who was represented by attorney Keith Scotland, wore a brown suit as he stood before the judge in the Port-of-Spain Second Court.

Carmona ordered that the tests be carried out on the prisoner to determine if he is fit to live a life of freedom again.

The sentence review hearing was adjourned to September 22.

Renuka Rambhajan appeared for the State.

Attin and co-accused Noel Seepersad were convicted on February 7, 1997 of the murders of housewives Candace Scott and Karen Sa Gomes.

Attin was deemed a juvenile then, and Justice Herbert Volney sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment, and ordered that the prisoner return for sentence review.

On July 11, 1994, Scott and Sa Gomes were killed at Scott’s home in Westmoorings.

The women were attacked by the two men, who raped and then murdered them, in the presence of their children.

Seepersad was sentenced to death, but that sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
